Learning has never been so easy!

The following 'How-To' describes how to update the BIOS firmware on a Dell Server that currently has no operating system installed. This example was completed on a Dell PowerEdge R415 which needed to be upgraded in order to run Windows HYPERV 2012 Server.

13 Steps total

Step 1: Switch BIOS to regular BIOS boot manager

Make sure your BIOS is set to boot from the BIOS boot manager, not the UEFI boot manager

Step 2: Download Dell SBUU (Systems Build Update Utility)

Contact Dell support and download the latest SBUU available. You will then need to burn this to a DVD or create a bootable USB drive. The SBUU is a pre-boot linux environment to complete firmware upgrades on the server.

At the time, this link was the recent version of SBUU provided by dell support:

http://downloads-us.dell.com/FOLDER00651629M/1/cdu_2.1_core_339.iso

NOTE: You can use UNetbootin to create a bootable USB from an iso image

Step 3: Extract Server Update Utility Repository to USB drive

Contact Dell support to obtain the latest Server Update Utility Repository available for your server model.

Burn the .iso image to another USB drive.

Step 4: Boot to SBUU

Boot the DVD or USB containing the SBUU

Step 5: Wait for GUI of SBUU to load

After selecting the USB/DVD containing the SBUU, wait 1-2 minutes for the GUI to load.

Step 6: Select Firmware Upgrade

Select the 'Configure' link next to the Firmware Upgrade.

The Firmware Configuration page will then load. Select the location of your Server Update Utility Repository (USB Drive) and then click the 'Continue' link at the bottom of the page.

Step 7: Select all applicable updates to apply

Select the updates you wish to apply/upgrade.

If the Update Status is a green check arrow, the component is up to date (depending on the repository loaded). If the Update Status is a blue arrow pointing up, there is an update available for that component.

After all the updates you wish to apply have been selected, choose the 'System Build and Update Utility Home' link at the bottom.

Step 8: Apply/Export the updates to server

Select the 'Apply/Export Configuration' button from the SBUU home page.

Step 9: Apply/Export - Step 2

On the next page, check both the 'Apply Configuration to Current System' and 'Exit on Failure' check boxes, then select the 'Apply/Export' button at the bottom to begin the upgrade process.

Step 10: Wait for Upgrades to complete

The Dell SBUU will then check the server status and apply all updates. This process may take some time to complete so be patient. If there are any issues, the SBUU will exit upon failure.

Step 11: Confirm Upgrades are completed

Once the server reboots (back into SBUU) follow step 6 again to enter into the Firmware Upgrade page. Make sure all updates you selected to apply have successfully been updated. It will contain a green check arrow if fully up to date.

If everything is completed, you can exit SBUU now.

Step 12: Make sure BIOS is back into UEFI (if needed)

Step 13: Official Dell SBUU Guide (v2.2)

    Good write up on this.
One boot option I didn't see above was using the DRAC to boot the server off the downloaded SBUU ISO. (for servers that have one, of course)

There is a far easier way if you want to update ALL the firmware and BIOS on your server. Head to the following Dell site and you can download a bootable ISO of all the update for your server.

How to prepare your computer before upgrading?

Although updating to a new Windows 10 version is a relatively simple process, similar to a repair upgrade; users should perform some basic pre-requisites before initiating the upgrade.

If you are finding it difficult to carry out some of the steps described below, please review detailed instructions how to perform them:

When making significant changes to your computer such as updating the operating system, you should always backup.

  • How to free up disk space in Windows 10

  • Disable (preferrably uninstall) your Antivirus utility before attempting the upgrade.

  • Restart a few times then try again.

  • Disable General USB Devices (example - Smart Card Reader). You can do this from the Device Manager.

  • If you have any external devices attached to the machine, disconnect them (example, gaming controllers, USB keys, external hard disk, printers, non-essential devices).

  • Load your BIOS then reset the BIOS defaults.

  • Check if there are any available BIOS updates for your system, then apply them.

  • Perform a clean boot, restart then try again.

  • If you are upgrading using the .ISO file, disconnect from the Internet during setup, if you are connected by LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi, disable both then attempt setup again.

  • If you are updating through Windows Update, when the download reaches 100% disconnect from the Internet LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi then proceed with the installation.

  • If that does not work, try using the .ISO file to upgrade if possible.

  • If you are connected to a domain, switch to a local account or upgrade based on your System Administrators discretion.
